I hate to sound like a broken record - but the Critter Oil keeps critters away!! I am seriously not using any preventative other then the Oil in Miami and we have fire ants, ticks, mosquitos, fleas and everything else. Bugs HATE the smell of critter oil, but I love it. It makes my doggies smell all aromatic and fresh.
