I don't shave it because you do risk a chance of irritation; I just keep it cut short. Every week when he gets his bath, I look him over to see what needs trimming. I hold his tail out of the way, and just trim the area under his tail very short, but not bald. He never gets any dingleberries.
I doubt if it needs it more than once a month.
