Instructions For Adoption/Rescue/Volunteering @ PGAMD

This shelter has a staggering number of weekly intakes! Dog and puppies (including PUREBRED), cats, kittens of all sizes and colors. Please check their listings frequently as the animal you are seeking may be waiting.

****LISTINGS****

PGAMD Shelter animals are listed on the animal search sites PetHarbor.com: Animal Shelter adopt a pet; dogs, cats, puppies, kittens! Humane Society, SPCA. Lost & Found. and Petfinder.com: Adopt a pet and help an animal shelter rescue a puppy or kitten..

Use zip code 20747 for your PetHarbor entry. These listings are the most up-to-date.

****DOG STATUS/AVAILABILITY****

Since PGAMD receives animals that are strays, lost, abandoned, and also turned in by owners, it may not be apparent from the listings which are which. If a dog is still being held the 3-5 days, depending on the dog, for an owner to reclaim a lost pet, it may not be available for adoption quite yet. There is always the chance that a dog will be found (which is good) during the time it is held.

Owner surrendered dogs are usually available right away and have no mandatory hold time. Please, if you’re interested in dog or cat, call the shelter to find out the status of the animal, and if it’s being held for a few days, find out if you can put in an application ahead of time, or the date on which it will be available to receive an application.

****RESCUE****

PGAMD is rescue friendly! 501(c)(3) designation and applicable paperwork are required. Rescues are especially needed for cats and kittens.

****ADOPTIONS****

ADOPTERS:
Accepted out of county and out of state. You do not have to be a Prince Georges County, MD Resident to adopt.

FEES: The adoption fee for dogs and puppies is a modest $15.00 and the adoption fee for cats and kittens is $10.00. Additional fees for spay/neuter surgery ($25.00-$70.00), microchip ($15.00), and county license ($5.00) may apply.

PROCEDURE:
The adoption process does necessitate two visits to the Prince Georges Animal Management Division Shelter. The first visit is a "meet and greet" and to fill out the adoption paperwork. If you rent from a landlord, documentation is required that animals are permitted. For existing animals, veterinary records are required. It is suggested that you bring copies of these to the shelter when you visit. Once your adoption application is approved, your animal will receive veterinary care and spay/neuter surgery if needed. You will then visit the shelter for a second time to pick up your new companion.

**Note: Check the status of the animal you're interested in with the shelter. Even if it has an application pending, many of these fall through at the last minute leaving the animal stranded...if there's one you really like, put in an application right away, or if there are already two applications, check back to see if either was completed!

**According to county statutes, owner surrendered animals can be euthanized at any point after intake, strays are held for 3-5 days...it may be longer for either, but not required!

LINKS WITH ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Click the county web links for information regarding adoption procedures, rules, and fees. Please read all instructions regarding adoption very carefully. The system is not flexible! Note: All family members must be present for the adoption proceedings.
