I've done this at home several times also. It doesn't hurt at all. I just cut a hole in a paper plate for the candle to sit in (so no ash gets on you by mistake), laid on my side and lit the candle. Mine took about 10 to 15 minutes per ear. The worst part to me was the smell of the candle burning. I tried doing it outside once, but it doesn't work as good because slight breezes mess it up. It's kind of neat in a weird way.
