Loki has had UTI's and we had a tough time housebreaking him so, as you might guess, our steam cleaner has gotten a workout. I can definately answer your question about setting the stain, since I have WHITE carpet (I swear it looked beige on that little teeny square when we picked it out). We have a Bissell Quicksteamer. We blot the spot right away and clean it with natures miracle. Then we use the steamer. It works on all stains that come from both ends of this little dog. A few times I've been in a hurry and cleaned up with Natures Miracle and then not steam cleaned until days later and it still gets the stain out completely. We plan on replacing our carpet eventually anyway, so if it sets the stain in the pad i don't really care. I can't smell anything, though, which is what I care most about. Loki is never out when we aren't home (someone is usually home), so I've never had to clean up an "old" stain. We always got them right away. I hope that helps.
