Teach Your Yorkie to "Give Kisses!" My dogs all know the "kisses" command. Some people may NOT want to be kissed by a dog, but those of us who are totally smitten just can't help it...
So, here's how to teach your dog to "give kisses."
1. Sit on the floor so your dog is able to reach your face, "lips, cheeks, or nose"
2. To get kisses on the lips, say "give kisses" and put a treat between your lips. (the act of putting the treat between your teeth will allow you to use a finger to your lips as the hand signal for "give kisses" later.)
3. Lean forward and praise with "good kiss!"
If you want your dog to "give kisses" on your cheek or nose, the training is a little different:
1. Put a little peanut butter on your nose or cheek and lean toward your dog.
2. Say "give kisses" and tap the area with your finger. (The finger to the area will be the hand signal later for the command.)
3. Say "good kisses" when the dog licks the designated "kiss area."
Once you have practiced the command and your dog is showing that he understands what is expected of him, phase out the peanut butter, and sit a further distance from your dog. Say "give kisses" and once the dog complies, reward with praise, petting, or a treat!
Have other people (friends, family) ask your dog to "give kisses" and allow them to treat your dog after he does it!
Praise is so important in training, so don't forget to tell your dog "good kisses" when your dog does what is asked of him!! |
