Hi Shelby~
Unfortunately your story is not unusual. There are a lot of really nice breeders out there but sometimes they are hard to find because there are also a lot of very busy, self absorbed, show breeders who don't "have time" for pet fanciers. There are several show breeders who are members here but we have no YTCA show breeders to my knowledge.
I have come to be of the opinion that a good hobby breeder is a better bet for acquiring a good quality pet rahter than a show breeder for several reasons: (Please understand that I am making generalizations which do not apply across the board and these opinions are from only my personal experiences as well as stories I have heard from others)
1. They have fewer dogs and they usually raise them in their house, not in a kennel away from the house.
2. They concentrate on temperament as the #1 attribute in the animal rather than outward appearance and trying to get the perfect looking yorkie.
3. The dogs are better socialized because they have interaction with humans.
4. They do not "cull" or kill a puppy of the wrong color or with some other fault outside the breed standard.
5. Most know their lines as well as a show breeder.
6. They have the "time" and actually enjoy educating companion fanciers about the breed. (Show breeders are discouraged from associating with pet breeders and they usually are to busy to be bothered with yorkie fanciers who do not show.
7. They have a true love of the breed as a pet rather than a collectible of a show piece. (To be fair, there are show breeders who have this love to)
8. They will treat you as an equal and not make you feel stupid for asking stupid questions. They do not pretend to be "better" somehow.
9. The price you pay may be less if you don't care about how many "champions" are in the pedigree.
There are some exceptional hobby breeders on this site.
Others will give you different opinions and this is just mine. I would try breeders.net and put in your zip code. please ask a lot of questions because they don't have to be reputable to advertise there, but I have had great luck with finding my last puppy that way and she is "perfect" in my eyes although she would never place in a show ring!
If you would like me to help more please PM me. Good luck! |
