We've heard that Katrina would be coming into the Gulf for at least a few days- I would think that as soon as you hear a hurricane is coming your way, wouldn't you go fill up? Or, during the season- constantly have your tank full. The gas won't go to waste if you don't have to evacuate. I also don't understand how stores run out of plywood, water, etc. It's hurricane season- stock up in advance! I say this as a notherner so maybe I'm missing something, but it still doesn't make sense to me how some people are not prepared.
My sister lives in Pensacola, FL and she participated in a program like "Habitat for Humanity" for low-income families who have been affected by Hurricane Ivan (last September). She said it will be 10 years before the organization (Rebuild Northwest Florida, I think) will be able to help repair all of the houses of low-income families from that hurricane alone. I can't imagine the devastation that people will feel in New Orleans from Katrina.
It breaks my heart to think of the animals that are left behind. I could never do that. I'd be like Pat in the chemical spill- sitting with my animals and accepting the same fate that they face. |
