My furbabies' eyes get that way during the spring, summer, and early fall. Vet says it's allergies. She has me giving them 0.1 ml of children's benadryl per pound of doggie 2x's per day. There is red-dye free meds now. Should not be given, though, without vet's approval. Chipper still has some gunk in his eyes each eve. I just dampen it and use the comb part of an eyebrow brush to gently comb it out. I've been doing that since he come to our home, so he's used to it. Doesn't like it, but he tolerates it.
