The vet did prescribe cough expectorant and a bronchial dilator though. We didn't need to give it to him though because we found and eliminated the allergen that was causing his problems...
Aside from allergies, it could be an upper respiratory infection/kennel cough. Both of these typically happen at night. |
My Yorkie did that last week....coughing and basically throwing up white foamy junk. It continued for quite a while and scared me so much that I took him to the emergency vet at 2AM. They determined that it was kennel cough and put him on a antibiotic and cough syrup. He also got a shot while we were there to help out.
The best thing to do is get to the vet and maybe run more tests if it continues. The emergency vet heard him cough and happened to see him spit up. They immediately knew and saved me the cost of a blood test. The meds have done wonders and while he has a lingering cough, it is 150% better. He went from coughing every 3 minutes to maybe once or twice every few hours. The emergency vet sent the records to my regular vet who has called me three times since just to be sure he is on the mend.
Have things improved since going to the vet? While the idea of kennel cough scared me, I feel much better after talking to both the emergency vet and my regular vet.
