It's the result of a recessive gene causing the color variant. Same applies to chocolate yorkies. The colors are not the standard set by AKC...so they can't be shown but are still allowed to be registered if their sire and dam were registered AKC.
There are a couple of people here who own a golden yorkie or chocolate.
