The breeder that bred Lola is going to be out of town when she is supposed to have her pups, but she told me that there is another breeder in my area and she was going to see if she couldd help if needed. I could call my vet.
I have been watching videos and my breeder told went over it with me I just want have it down so I do not forget. If everything goes well this is what I got.
1) pup comes out. Sometimes puppies come out on their own and sometimes you have to be ready to assist...Such as lubricating, turning pups and helping to pull gently out with a contraction
2)break open the sack and keep it away from the mouth. The first thing I do after a pup is born is to clamp the cord with Mosquito locking forceps...If the placenta is still inside Mom I attatch two forceps and cut the cord between the forceps leaving the one forcep attacted to the placenta...(With the next contraction you should be able to gently pull the placenta out)...I immediately start to tear off the sack using a towel to grab a hold of it and start suctioning out fluid..First the mouth and then the nose...Also rubbing and drying briskly with the towel to stimulate breathing and circulation...Listen to the sounds the pup is trying to make...You want the pup to be able to cry and to get all the gaspy noises to stop...
3) Wipe its face,
4)clear out any mucas from its nose and mouth with a baby susker.
5)this is where I'm not sure do I tie the cord? or stimulate it first. let me know if I am right and the rest. After I have the pup breathing and looking good I take care of the cord...Often times the clamp will have stopped any bleeding if so I do nothing else...If it is still bleeding I tie it with a strand of Dental Floss close to the body and cut the floss short so Mom will not pull on it or try to chew it off...Give the pup to Mom and let the pup nurse while you wait for the next puppy...
If a pup is not out within an hour is that when I worry? I always call my vet after a Mom has been pushing for an hour...If we have to take a Mom in to the vet for assistance we have to take into travel time and the time it takes to get all her staff together for a possible c-section....I do not like to see our Mom's totally exhausted before electing to do a c-section...I want to give them every chance to make it through the surgery without any problems...
Thanks again, Christina
BYW she has 2 weeks. | Good luck with your litter!
