Many dogs need the scent of the human on their food before they will eat it. If your scent is on the food they think it's safe to eat. Some dog behaviorists think this is also a way to establish yourself as alpha dog. It sounds like maybe you have already done this with your pet, and he needs your "approval" before eating. My other theory is that the water bowl doesn't reflect as well, and he's never been frightened by it.
