We taught Bailey to use a service/desk bell. ($5 at office depot) It sits right next to the door - so it doesn't ring when we use the door for other than potty training. Our friends just think its hillarious!
When training - we just scoop her up, grab her paw and tapped the bell - and said "outside".
It was so successful - that we put another bell in the bedroom. The down side was that when she was younger - she'd hit the bell to go outside and play....and our bedroom was upstairs (ugh). Annoyed, after a couple weeks, I picked up the bell in the bedroom. Next, she discovered the springy door stop - and now paws at that when she needs to potty. At least she doesn't paw at it to play. These dogs are sooo smart!!!!
