Joey used to have the tear stains, not so much stains, but runny eyes, as a puppy, I read about giving them distilled water, and that the mineral in regular water caused this. I personally didn't believe it, but I thought I would test it. Sure enough the distilled water stopped the tearing, I didn't know if it was a coincidence or not, then one day I noticed the tearing again, I checked with hubby to make sure Joey hadn't gotten any regular water, and he confessed he had given him some. Every now and then I would test my theory and the tears returned each time. Finally, when Joey was about 8 months old we tried regular water, and we haven't had any tearing since. So, I am pretty sure the bottle water helped with Joey, but there may have been other factors involved such as "teething", but his food remained the same the whole time. By the way, if you decide to test the bottle water theory, Walmart has a gallon container of purified water that is made especially for baby's formula, and it has added chloride, something that regular bottled water lacks. I think it takes about 2-3 days to completely stop the tears.
