I use that camera, too. I've found that for taking pictures of quickly moving dogs, an SLR can't be beat.
If you're looking to add any equipment, you might want to consider the 50mm f/1.8 if you don't already have it. It costs about $80, and you can get some of the best portrait pictures of any lens.
