I would only consider it if I had no other option, but I would be a basket case the whole time.
I would however, consider paying for a service someone mentioned once where flight attendants fly with puppies in the cabin or where you pay a little extra for the breeder to fly to you with the puppy in the cabin with her the whole time.
(Couldn't afford either option, but that's what I would do if I couldn't fly or drive and pick the puppy up myself.)
