Default Crate in the living room vs. the bedroom

When I was younger we crate trained our cockapoo with great success. We would put her in her crate during the day when we would leave the house, and at night were she would just sleep. We kept her crate downstairs in our family room next to the kitchen, which is where we spent most of our time, except for at night - our bedrooms were upstairs. I have always planned on keeping our Yorkie's crate in our family room/kitchen area when we finally get her in 2 months. My husband and I will be living in a small 1 level condo/flat and our room will be just around the corner from where we'd like to keep her crate. My question is that I've noticed a lot of you say you keep your Yorkie's crates in your room next to your bed. I had not wanted to do this because I thought that it would set them up for separation anxiety when we have to put her in there and have to leave her alone for a couple of hours.

I'm mainly worried about this because last year my roommate got a miniature pinsher/pomeranian. She was only 2 pounds and the cutest little thing, but she would freak out if she couldn't see us. When we would try and clean or take a nap we would put her in my little bathroom that we'd close off with a baby gate. She also had her little crate in there. Anyways, if she couldn't see us, she would cry and cry. She wouldn't even play with any of her toys if she couldn't see us. Needless to say she was way too much for my roommate to handle, and 2 weeks later she took her back to Petland and had her readopted out there.

So yeah, I just don't want this to happen to me - not that I would ever give her up if she was a pain in the but. I don't want a needy puppy...
