My 22 year old son has in the past year started bonsai and is enjoying it tremendously. I've purchased many of the supplies, dirt, tools, etc. for his birthday and found them on ebay. One store was called Joe's Bonsai, I think. It was recommended to him to start with small cheap juniper bushes from Wal-mart or any nursery. It is a good idea for your son to join a local bonsai club if possible and there is a lot of information on the internet.
