I am so sorry to hear your baby has legg perthes. Some people choose to do both legs at one time so the dog does not have to undergo surgery twice and there by taking twice and long to be healed. He will require a lot of extra love and care but hopefully it will be best in the long run. I will be praying that he has a speedy recovery.
