There is much new data out about how our dogs should be vaccinated. The new protocols call for vaccinating no more than every 3 years after the first adult booster as the immunity levels remain high enough to forego annual vaccinations. The 3 year protocol is actually a compromise as the vaccines have been shown to be effective for longer than that. In most states, by law, the rabies vaccine must be a 3 year duration so it is senseless to give it more often than that. If that is the case in your state, your dog is protected for at least 3 years with the rabies vaccine and you are within the law also. Many don't give the lepto vaccine because there are 4 known strains of leptospirosis and the vaccine is only good for 1 of them and its effectiveness is questionable. Lepto isn't a big risk unless your dog drinks water contaminated by an infected animal (usually wild animal) or licks an area where a mouse has peed or such. Most Yorkies don't risk exposure due to them not running loose unless you're in a rural area. Over-vaccinating dogs year after year can have a cumulative negative effect on their health. Many vets still cling to the annual vaccinations as a way to do business but if you google 'over vaccination in dogs' you'll get a lot of good information. Sorry to hear about Buddy's reaction and I hope he's doing better. After researching this subject, you may want to re-consider if you want him vaccinated annually.
