When we were growing up, we used to "take in" stray dogs all of the time. Since we didn't know their names, they always got new ones. I think they just naturally start responding to whatever you call them. Can't see how it would really traumatize them. I think dogs are just happy to have someone that loves them and giving them attention! Everyone in my family has their own special names to the dogs anyway (you know, honey...sweetie...trouble!)
