Sharon,

I feed my guys shank bones -- which is the same thing as a "marrow bone". I have my butcher cut the shanks about 3/4" wide (see pic). I make either soup or a stew for my family's dinner and clean the bones for the kids. They are perfectly safe - there are no splinters, and nothing to injest because the marrow is in the soup.
