I always think the most helpful thing to do is start a collection/folder of tear-sheets. In other words, look through magazines and anything that you truly like in terms of decoration - tear it out. At some point, you'll start to understand just what you're currently attracted to with design/color/style - and what might be timeless vs. trendy. I find it helps a lot.
