How old is the pup? They do not have full bladder/bowel control until 6 months of age. So until then, if he's very young he needs to go out every one to two hours. Older pups every 3-4 hours.

Make sure you are feeding him on a schedule.

You can the bells on your door and everytime you go to open the door to let him out, tough the bells with your finger and see if he will attempt to put his nose there. Do it every time you go out the door. (Eventually he will learn that a bell ringing means an open door.) At any time, if your pup touches the bells with his nose, say "YES!" immediately and hurry over to open the door!

Also, when you want him to go outside, clap your hands gently and call him to you. Keep encouraging him with gentle claps and verbal encouragement until he gets out the door. Praise and pet him for a job well done!

Take him outside to his designated potty area and wait until he starts to pee or poo. As soon as he starts to go potty (not before...not after!) Say "go potty" and praise/pet gently.

Be very consistent and very patient. He will learn to "go potty" on command in his designated area.
