This is a very easy and practical command that you can teach your dogs!

What you will need for training and doing the command:
Dog Bed (actual bed, blanket, or towel)
Designated Bed Area
Harness (collar on larger dogs)
Kong or Chew Toy

How to train the command:
-First, place a bed in each room you want a bed to be.
-Training should last no more than 10 minutes at a time, 3 times a day
-Guide your dog to the dog bed, either by using the harness to walk him over, or by having you follow him
-Very "stubborn cases" can be carried and placed on the bed.
-Once the dog is in his bed, say "Bed" (you can substitute your own command word as well...just always use the same word!
-Don't say "Bed" UNLESS your dog is on the bed! If you say it before he is on, or right when he gets up and off, he will not relate the command with laying in his bed!
-After saying the word "Bed" pet and praise your dog!
-You can also place a chew toy or filled kong on your pups bed to encourage him to spend time there!

If your dog gets off the bed before you give a release command, or before you want him to, slimply take him back to his bed, place him in it and say "bed."

After a couple of days, he will start to go on command without being "helped." He will slip up, though, as there is a learning process. So if he goes to "bed" on command a few times, and then does not go when you say the command, simply walk him over, place him in the bed, and give the command.

Always pet or praise so that he knows he is doing what you want him to!

NEVER tell him in an angry voice or tone to go to his bed. This will make his place seem like a punishment area, and will make the training harder and no fun for your dog!
Why is the bed command useful?
1. It gives your dog his own comfortable space "outside of the crate."
2. You can teach your dog that your bed is your space and his bed is his space.
3. If you have a hyper "greeter" dog, you can tell him to go to his "bed" when people come over.
4. You can tell him to go to his "bed" when you are eating to nip begging in the bud.

Having a bed in your bedroom and/or living room will allow your dog to be in an unconfined place, feeling close to his pack, without having your space constantly invaded.

Having a bed command also allows you to send your dog (with a messy treat) to an area you don't mind him getting a little crummy or what not from a treat.
