The best rule of thumb is to let them sort it out providing there is no blood shed. It takes time, time and more time. I always tell my older dogs to "be nice" and if they become aggressive towards a little one then they are in trouble. I've been through this countless times over the years taking in rescues and foster pups. Be sure and provide your older dog with a "safe" place where he can get away from the pup.
I once had an adult female yorkie who had been an only child since puppyhood and we introduced a rescued maltipoo. Those two hated each other and would fight like mad, there were parts of ears removed etc. No amount of scolding etc seemed to work. Then all of a sudden after 8 that's right EIGHT months, it was as if someone turned a switch and they were best buddies. They remained best buddies until the yorkie passed on, sadly her maltipoo buddy soon followed her. I know they are together sorting out the little ones on the other side of Rainbow Bridge.
So patience is the key, they will eventually sort it out as to who's who.
Presently my older yorkie gal wants nothing to do with Nugget but thankfully she is the most docile dog I've ever had so she just puts up with the the little terror's antics. |
