Heartworm medications like Heartgard and Inteceptor work retroactively...after the dog has been bit it destroys the heartworm larvae in the dog's blood. The pill given in June is to protect them from when they were bit in May, July for June and so on.
Ask your vet but if you are worried about them getting sick you can safely give it to them after you get home.
