Default Dogs and memory

Okay, I have a question for you all. A friend of ours was arguing with me today that dogs don't have memories. I told him that I don't think they have a memory like a human, but they DO have memories.

How else do they know who we are when we come home?

How do they learn tricks and get potty trained?

How do they learn commands and words like "eat", "hungry", "outside", "potty", etc.?

How do they know where their food dishes are? If they didn't have a memory, wouldn't they have to search for their food or water dish everytime they ate or drank?

He says they do everything by instinct, and I know that a lot of what they do IS by instict, but they have to have some sort of memory, don't you think?
