It used to be a non-chlorine with the ionization but that wore out replacing the copper all the time so DH switched it to chlorine so yes, we use a boat load of chemicals. It is a pain but worth it to have it there. I would never put in another one. We put this one in when the kids were growing up but now they are all gone, it mostly just sits. I do enjoy the waterfall but don't use the pool that much anymore.
