The vet again prescribed antibiotics, and again he seemed to be doing well.
And they kept a flea and tick killer on him year-round, since he spent a lot of time outside.
But my husband and I got a call from my brother-in-law Saturday morning telling us the news. We were shocked since we saw the dog on Thursday and he looked and acted totally normal and healthy.
Upon inspecting the body, they found two new ticks attached. They don't know exactly what happened, but the new ticks were also carriers of RMSF.
So, my reminder to everyone is to start now, if you haven't already. Keep bedding clean, keep your pets medicated against ticks and fleas, and check your pets for buggies. I check my dogs nightly. It doesn't take up too much of your time, and it could very well save your dogs life. |
Please also check your kids and yourself for ticks! My son had RMSF when he was six years old. We lived in a rural area and I found a tick on him about 10 days before he got sick. I was fanatical about ticks on the kids and pets, but just one trip across the yard and they can pick one up. It was nearly fatal for my son, so do keep your eyes open. He did recover completely, but it wasn't any fun.
