Default A sad reminder to watch for ticks, other pests this summer...

My brother-in-law's 3 year old Doberman died in his sleep Friday night, and I am heartbroken. He had Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, diagnosed early by his vet. He finished a full course of antibiotics, and seemed to be doing well. But, early last week, his lymph nodes started to swell again. The vet again prescribed antibiotics, and again he seemed to be doing well.
And they kept a flea and tick killer on him year-round, since he spent a lot of time outside.
But my husband and I got a call from my brother-in-law Saturday morning telling us the news. We were shocked since we saw the dog on Thursday and he looked and acted totally normal and healthy.
Upon inspecting the body, they found two new ticks attached. They don't know exactly what happened, but the new ticks were also carriers of RMSF.

So, my reminder to everyone is to start now, if you haven't already. Keep bedding clean, keep your pets medicated against ticks and fleas, and check your pets for buggies. I check my dogs nightly. It doesn't take up too much of your time, and it could very well save your dogs life.
