My hubby would do the same type of thing. He will leave the gate open while he takes out the garbage and I could get him to learn to either put the dogs in the house or shut the gate. I finally trained the dogs that the gate can NEVER be used. Now they only go in front thru the house they are afraid of the gate! They know they get in big trouble if they go out it.
