Rawhide bone is a manmade product made from an animals hide; its shaped to look like a bone, and it is not 100% digestible. Millions of dogs have chewed on them with no problems, but in a small percentage of cases they have been shown to cause intestinal blockage, so vets no longer recommend them. Real bones, such as you described, have had mixed reviews, and from what I gather, as long as they are not cooked, they are still considered safe. These too should be used with supervision.
