to have a puppy registered under akc or ckc does the breeder have to register it or can you register it when you buy the dog (if its not already registered)

Regarding the AKC, the breeder registers the litter, and then you register the puppy in your name. The breeder gives you the paper work to do this. One of the reasons I encourage people to register their dogs with the AKC is that it keeps breeders honest. Many breeders will tell you that the puppies are AKC illegible, but buyers don't find out this is not true until they try to register. If a breeder is telling you that it's so expensive for you –BEWARE- it's less than $20.00 for a buyer, and he probably doesn't have the proof he needs, or he may be producing enough puppies per year that would require an inspection. Even if you aren't planning to breed or show your dog your registration fee helps support the AKC inspection, and this will help eliminate some of the poorer breeders. So it's not just about the dog you are buying, but all dogs.

Regarding the CKC, I don't understand why you would register, what are you supporting?
