My last job -- which was technically my
first job, I just worked there for 12 years -- was with a real crappy company. Everyone who worked there was abused regularly in some way on a massive scale. (Overworked, underpaid, nasty, nasty surroundings with crazy people everywhere.)
The last straw came as I was about to depart on vacation. I think my boss at the time figured I'd blow a gasket, go on vacation and come back over it all. He wanted me to:
1) Switch jobs with a male co-worker who had been with the company about 6 months longer than me. Oh, and made about $10,000/yr more at the time than me.
2) Continue to do half the job I was already doing, but supposedly trading off.
3) Do all of this without a pay raise.
I gave myself 90 days to get out. Even if that meant going to McDonald's, buddy, that's where I'd be. Luckily, I got a good job with a great company -- with just 4 days left on the clock.
