Thanks for the rescue suggestions. I'm definitely open to adopting a dog... puppies are cute and it's sad to think of missing out on that, but I'd probably feel better giving a home to a dog that really needs it.

My only concern with rescuing is how you know if you're getting a dog that's well bred and won't have a lot of health problems. Everyone seems to focus a lot on finding a good breeder that breeds healthy dogs, and I guess you just never know where a rescue dog comes from. If I have the dog checked out at the vet will he be able to tell if there's anything major that's wrong with the dog?
