Try not to make a big issue out of it. He will pick up on this and it will make him anxious and more likely to poop in the wrong area. Do you take him outside for pottying if so try and take him out regularly and once he poops make a big fuss with treats and then bring him back in.
Dont lose heart just look at your routine and write it down and see if it varies from day to day or if it is regular , also try and look for signs of him needing to go , like circling so you know when he is about to poop and take him to the area you want him to go. Good luck.
