Cry My husband has chronic leukemia

My husband was just diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia. The doctor is putting him on a pill called Gleevec, which is supposed to kill the cancer cells. I hope and pray that this medicine works. He is starting the pills today. The doctor seems to think that this will take care of it. He said that hubby doesn't need chemo.
I'm scared because my mother's started out with chronic then went to acute.I know they have come along way in meds and treatments since my mom passed 10 years ago, but can't help worrying.
Does anyone know anything about this medicine or had any experiences with it? Just curious.
