It took a little while to crate train our two girls, but it really pays off in the long run. How old is he? When they are very young they can't hold it very long. So accidents do happen, my sister bought some very soft plushy blankets at Walmart, they wash up really well.
In the girls' crate they have two plushy blankets (one is really big and we fold it several times and it rests in the bottom), and I use the second one to cover them, it is much smaller. They also have one chew toy( a kong is best when they are puppies ). Oh and a nice fluffy stuffed animal that they use as a pillow.
