If the vet thinks he may have MVD, then the only treatment is medical and dietary management because surgery won't help a dog with MVD.
At that point, you would have to just keep him on a strict protocol, and it's possible for him to live a normal life with proper care.
I am interested in getting that information from you. Of course, I'd prefer to pick out the family myself just to make sure he does go to a good home, and I would try that first. But the option you explained sounds decent.
