I have one cat with the yorkies now, but at one time I had 3 (the other two live with my ex)...and they have never had a problem. Lily (my cat) doesn't particularly LOVE the dogs...but they don't upset her either. She just ignores them most of the time.

The other two cats, Sammie and Callie, actually used to play with the dogs...lol. They would slide across the kitchen floor and then roll over and wrestle with them. They LOVED it...it was so cute.

All the cats were first, except Callie. I would probably go with a kitten though, UNLESS you find a cat that is already good with dogs because he/she has been used to being around them.
