If you haven't had a home ec class in middle or high school like me...then it may be easier to start with simple pillows. I made 100's of different shaped pillows until I became a pro (and bored) then I moved to blankets..mainly baby blankets and slowly went to different valances, clothing, etc. patterns.
Good luck! I absolutely love to sew...just wish I had more time and space to do it!
