I hate it when people select pets so that they can reinforce people's opinion of them or want to make a statement. A pet should be chosen very carefully to fit in with ones lifestyle. Every time, I see someone with a truly "macho" type dog, I always think what are they (the owner) so insecure about? When I take Joey to Home Depot, he gets so much attention from great big "macho men." I think the more confident you are in yourself, the more you can do things to please yourself, and with age, you will learn, other's opinions shouldn't affect who you are, although it sounds like you have already learned this.
