New Pup Health Concerns I posted a while ago that I was going to be getting a new pup flown in from Texas from a breeder. I checked everything out with this breeder and everything seemed to be fine. After I had paid him for my new pup and before he shipped her I seen some new pups that he had posted online that he was selling that looked to be in horrible shape and in the background of the pictures it looked like he was in a garage full of cages of pups!
I was horrified when I seen then and confronted the breeder and he told me that he keeps the pups in the cages when he is doing shots and grooming so that he knows who has been done and who hasn't ect. I then called his vet to ask him about the health and well being of the pups this breeder breeds and the vet seemed to think that everything was fine and that I had nothing to worry about!
I got zoey on Sunday May 18th. The breeder told me that she was expected to be around 5-6 pounds full grown, she is currently 23 weeks. She came with a 1 year health guarantee and he stated she was up to date on her shots and wormings.
So when I picked her up from the airport she was terrified as can be expected! We got her home, let he scope things out and tried to make her as comfortable as possible. I noticed 1st how tiny she was. My Meeka is 2 months older than her and looked to be twice her size! She mostly hung out under the chair in the living room and we tried getting her to come out by offering her treats ect. But I didn't want to push the issue too much. The next day we got her out and just held her, gave her treats and loves. And I noticed how dirty she was so I gave her a short and quick bath just to make her feel maybe a little better. The water came out totally brown when I gave her a bath. I had an appointment the next day (2 days after getting her) to take her to the vet.
After her bath I noticed she still smelled really awful but just figured that it might take a few baths to get that smell out. I was checking her out, noticed her nails had probably never been trimmed, I looked in her ears and they were so red and swollen and noticed that her ears were the source of her nasty smell! They had scabs all in them both from her scratching at them. It was just horrible! Her eyes were all goopy too.
I took her to the vet and gave him all of her records for shots that the breeder had given to me and the vet told me that because they were all given way too long ago (last one back in march) that we had to start the series of shots all over again! As well as deworming her again because it had been too long. the only thing that was up to date was her rabies because the airlines require that!
The vet told me she had a horrible infection in both her ears as well as her left eye! So we went home with a bag of medications for her and a huge vet bill later!
She still hasn't came out of her shell yet, she very timid and will just lay on the couch and not move. If I put her down then she just goes under some furniture and hides. I haven't seen her playful at all, she won't give any kind of kisses and almost seems lethargic! The vet said that she is fine other than the infections but I am wondering if she is ever going to come out of it? for a 5 month old puppy this behavior is not normal at all! She is eating good and drinking good so atleast I know she is ok there.
What do you think I should do? I am so upset with this breeder! And wrote him an email about what the vet discovered! He seemed unconcerned about the whole thing!
Do you think my new little girl is going to be alright?
