Yorkies are prone to collapsed trachea, and this can be avoided by avoiding a collar. They have very delicate little necks so anything in the neck area should be avoided. For walking, a harness should be used because your dog is more than likely going to pull at some point, and it's better for them to pull with a harness so there is no pressure on their neck. If you MUST use a collar, use a breakaway collar that will fall off if there is any pull on it at all. I think you can usually find those in the cat section of stores.
