I wanted to start a thread where experienced owners could give new owners some advice on things to watch out for with their new dogs.

My first advice is this:

I live in the country and my dogs go out to use the bathroom. I NEVER let them out of my sight and I always LOOK outside for potential problems before I let them out of my arms. That includes, looking up. Hawks and other birds of prey WILL catch small dogs and kill them. It happens way more often than people think. Also, yorkies are, by nature, hunters and will not run away from snakes. One bite from some of the snakes down here in South MS and your yorkie would be dead before you could get to the vet.
