That is a hard question to answer since about 50% of my customers prefer bands, 50% barrettes.
Bands stay in better than barrettes, are not a choking hazard if your dog tries to chew the bow up and you save 75 cents on each bow so you can get more.
I use bands myself.
Many people think barrettes are easier with a squirmy puppy. I know lots of people prefer them because they are easy to take on and off during the day if you want to change an outfit, etc.
I have a lot of people who start with just a few bows and try an assortment of bands and the three barrette choices I offer. Then you can decide what works best for you.
BTW, I had a request for a boy version of the frog and turtle bow for those of you who like your furkids to match.
