It is very common for the water sack to break several hours before a puppy is delivered. Just like in women, the water breaks and then you head for the hospital and have your baby hours later. The important thing is to watch her contractions. Often the water will break in the early stages of labor. The contractions will get stronger and stronger until the momma is really pushing hard. Once the hard pushing begins they should have a puppy within an hour. Never break the sack that the puppy is in until the puppy is completely out. Often what happens in the case of a breached birth, the puppies hind end will come out and the head could still be stuck, if the sack is broken before the head comes out then the puppy can suffocate. |
