I've been playing mario kart since it came out wayyyyyyy back and I've unlocked mostly everything now. No worries!
You were playing perfectly fine. It's just hard when items are coming at you from every direction.
Some tips:
Drift + boost....always helps
Don't forget to do tricks after a jump!

yes that was me!!!! lol i was like YEAH im going to finally win something...and then...well maybe not. LOL so here is our questions...how do you drift and boost??? and the tricks?? do i just shake the remote??? becuase i tried that and nothing happened! and how in the world does everyone just fly off in the start of every race....LOL me and brandon are ALLLLLL WAYSSSSSS stuck at the start line looking like idiots becuase we cant figure out the boost off or whatever everyone else is doing to get started so quickly!
